I think I need to try shooting projectiles while also using the shield to defend though. I don't see a reason not to always have a cube so the cute melee attacks don't come into play, and the projectiles aren't as effective against mobile enemies. I love how easier it is to burst since you need a single button press to create the cube, but as a consequence I still stick to it as my main attack option. And that's super easy to do compared to the first game. If you burst downwards while falling it barely has an effect, but if you time it with a jump or spring I think your reach doubles.
